We, Europeans:
- aware of the richness of our heritage, drawing from the wealth of Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Greek philosophy, Roman law, and humanism with both religious and non-religious roots;
- aware of the values of Christian civilisation, which is the basic source of our identity;
- aware of the frequent betrayals of these values by both Christians and non-Christians;
- aware of the good and the evil we have cast upon the inhabitants of other continents; and
- bemoaning the catastrophe caused by the totalitarian systems that have originated within our civilisation,
would like to build our common future
- on the basis of a profound respect for every person and recognition of his or her inalienable dignity;
- convinced that every human being is significant and indispensable; that every person deserves to have his or her rights secured; that every human being should be expected to fulfil his or her social responsibilities;
- conscious of the dangers stemming from a disrespect of his or her human dignity and human rights;
- appreciating the wealth of diversity and convinced of a need to develop a shared foundation of values;
- convinced that every European is responsible for both the development of his or her own national culture and for the formation of a common European culture, which is our collective task;
- aware of the joint responsibility of Europeans for the future of humanity; and
- aware of the menacing threats which endanger humanity,
and commit ourselves to the creation of conditions facilitating the advancement of each individual, each community, and all of humanity.
